Government Funded Abortions Essay by Mary Susan Scott

Due to Obamacare, government funded abortions have become a hotly debated topic.  Abortion was decriminalized in 1973 with the Supreme Court decision of Roe V. Wade. In 2010, Obamacare declared abortion healthcare. In 1976, Congressman Henry Hyde introduced the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde amendment stopped the Department of Health and Human Services from funding abortions except in cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother. However, with Obamacare, some money for abortions doesn’t go through the Department of Health and Human Services. Federal abortion money is channeled through other sources. U.S. federally funded abortions have caused outrage among pro-lifers and has led to an even stronger national division in the abortion debate; therefore, the government should cut abortion funding to mitigate the tension in America and to create more available money to spend elsewhere, such as “true” healthcare and education.

            National polls suggest that the majority of American people are opposed to federally funded abortions because abortion runs counter to traditional religious beliefs. Some Americans believe that abortion is genocide:

“We call this endeavor the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP) because Webster’s New World Encyclopedia, Prentice Hall General Reference, 1992, defines “genocide” as “The deliberate and systematic destruction of a national, racial, religious, political, cultural, ethnic, or other group defined by the exterminators as undesirable.” The definition readily applies to abortion. The “national group” is American “unwanted” unborn children and they are now being destroyed at the rate of nearly 1 out of every 3 conceived. They are being terminated in an elaborate network of killing centers.” –Cunningham

             Along these same lines, pro-lifers and scientists absolutely believe that abortion is the taking of a human life. It has been determined by Dr. Micheline M. Mathews-Roth that life begins at conception; it’s a scientific fact. The moment before sperm and egg meet, there is no individual. But directly at the moment of fertilization, a new human being is formed.

             Defunding the abortion industry will help soften the abortion debate because all pro-lifer and some pro-choicers wish that abortions weren’t federally funded. Due to the recent Planned Parenthood controversy of covering up rape and sex trafficking of minors, a lot of pro-choice Americans have changed their views of Planned Parenthood.  Many want the organization defunded. As for those women who will not be able to afford an abortion that “need” one, they’re covered under the government in cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother. If this money doesn’t cover them and it’s an elective abortion, they’ll just have to come up with the money themselves. They can look for discounts at clinics, have a garage sale, tap into savings, redeem bottles and cans, etc. There are many ways to raise money.

              The government funding of abortion in the United States has caused outrage among pro-lifers which has lead to an even stronger division in the abortion debate.  The government should cut funding to mitigate tension in America and to free money to be spent elsewhere, such as in “true” healthcare and education. For women who need money and if abortion is ever defunded, they can simply raise the money on their own if they’re not covered by exceptions in the Hyde Amendment. The tension between Americans can easily soften if H.R. 3 passes through the house and Planned Parenthood is defunded.
