Where Should We Turn In Times of Greif?

When tragedy strikes, and someone we know and love has died, and the death was as a result of illness, neglect, carelessness, abuse, accident, or murder, there are only two ways two go in dealing with that loss; away from God, or toward God. Those who turn away from God harbor resentment, hatred, and vengefulness; some seeking their own justice; some blaming God for what has happened. They are without hope, full of anger and despair. For them, there is no peace; there is no comfort. Even when they have allowed themselves some satisfaction in taking revenge or exacting their own justice, they are left empty and never satisfied. But there are those who turn toward God during those times. Instead of focusing on their loss, they are thankful, not for the loss, but for the time that God has given them with that person who has died. There is no hatred or resentment. God is not blamed. They grieve, yet they are at peace, and are comforted.
Psalm 139:15-16 says,” My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Does this mean that God has planned in advance the day of our death no matter how it occurs? I don’t think that’s what it means. I think God has set aside a certain number of days that each of us may live, but those days may be cut short by our own actions, or by the actions of someone else. God knows every deed of every person who ever lived. If by someone’s actions a life is cut short, God who knows what’s in each heart will judge those actions and His judgment will be fair and just.
The Bible says, ”Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.” Romans 12:19
As difficult as it may be, turn to God and remember those whom you love with thanksgiving and praise. One of your many rewards may be a perfect reunion with the one who you love and miss, after your life here on earth is over.
